Fortuna Hjorring and Brondby secure Champions League spots

By Ciara McCormack

It’s been a good week for Our Game’s Lisa Woods. First named to Norway’s World Cup squad on Thursday, today Woods’ club team Fortuna Hjorring, secured a 3-0 win over third-place Skovbakken, guaranteeing Fortuna and Brondby as the two teams that will represent Denmark in next year’s Champions League.

Despite quality play from Skovbakken and Denmark’s young star Pernille Harder, Fortuna were able to take a 1-0 lead into the changeroom at halftime with a goal from Nigerian Chi-Chi Igbo.  Fortuna’s Danish international, Kristine Pedersen doubled the lead in the 80th minute, before one of Fortuna’s American players, Leah Morales, scored her first goal for the club at the 83rd minute. Fortuna’s other American player, Megan Manthey, played all 90 minutes, and had a strong game from reports.

Fortuna will head into the Champions League trying to beat their best-ever performance, a silver medal in 2003, when they lost to eventual champion, Umea of Sweden.
