NWSL Attendance Watch: Week 3

NWSL Week 3 attendance numbers and overall attendance numbers for the season to date.

Notes

Teams were back at their regular homes for the season. Weather conditions and school nights didn’t help attendance numbers this week.

Week 3 saw the first midweek game between Seattle Reign and Washington Spirit. Cold conditions and a Wednesday night perhaps kept the crowd at home, as 1,754 showed up to see the Reign take down the Spirit, 3-1.

In Chicago, cold and windy conditions didn’t stop 1,822 from seeing a grind-it-out 1-0 win for the Washington Spirit. The 1,822 in attendance was up 6.5% from Chicago’s 2013 home average attendance (1,711). In Boston, rain all day night might have contributed to the low attendance number for the Breakers as 1,263 saw the team record its first win of the season, defeating Sky Blue FC, 3-2. Last week, 2,018 attended the Breakers’ home opener against the Houston Dash. The Reign played again on Sunday, this time welcoming the Dash. Attendance was better for this afternoon game, as 2,290 saw the Reign defeat the Dash, 2-0. The Reign’s Sunday attendance was slightly down from its 2013 home season average of 2,306.

The Portland Thorns raised the 2013 NWSL Championship banner in their home opener. The crowd of 14,124 was up 6% from the team’s 2013 home average attendance (13,320) and saw the Thorns defeat FC Kansas City, 3-1.
