CONCACAF Group Standings After Day 2

Both groups have finished their first day of play, and everyone has played one match. Three teams – USA, Mexico and Trinidad & Tobago – have one win each, two teams – Guatemala and Jamaica – drew their match, and three teams – Costa Rica, Honduras and Cayman Islands – have one loss each.

Group A

Nation GP W-D-L Pts GF GA Goal Diff
USA 1 1-0-0 3 6 0 +6
Guatemala 1 0-1-0 1 0 0 0
Jamaica 1 0-1-0 1 0 0 0
Costa Rica 1 0-0-1 0 0 6 -6

Group B

Nation GP W-D-L Pts GF GA Goal Diff
Mexico 1 1-0-0 3 6 0 +6
T&T 1 1-0-0 3 2 0 +2
Honduras 1 0-0-1 0 0 2 -2
Cayman Islands 1 0-0-1 0 0 6 -6

The most interesting result was in Group A: the draw between Jamaica and Guatemala means both of those teams will need wins against Costa Rica in order to stay in second place in the group. If one of them had secured a win on day one, they could get away with a draw against CRC and maybe still take second. Guatemala is up first, with a kick-off against the Ticas today at 5pm ET.

Likewise, Costa Rica, despite zero points and a goal differential of -6, is in a pretty good position thanks to that draw. They have a good shot at winning their next two games for 6 points in the group and moving on to the semifinals. Even a draw against one of them and win against the other would suffice.

And in Group B, it’s as expected: Mexico and Trinidad & Tobago on top, with the winner between the two – their third match, on Tuesday the 14th – determining #1 and #2 in the group. But both need another win before then; for T&T in particular, not a given.

Group A will play their second matches today starting at 5pm ET, with Group B following tomorrow.
