Historic day at both Cyprus Cup and Algarve Cup

Kelly Smith won her 100th cap with England and scored in a 2-0 win over Italy at the Cyprus Cup, while Iceland beat Sweden for the first time ever, shocking the No. 4 FIFA ranked team in the world, 2-1, at the Algarve Cup in Portugal. In other action today at Algarve, the U.S. Women’s National Team beat Japan (2-1), Norway beat Finland (2-1), Denmark beat China (1-0), Portugal beat Wales (3-1), and Romania beat Chile (2-0). In Cyprus, Canada, France, South Korea, and the Netherlands won, while Russia and Mexico played to a scoreless draw.

Boston Breakers midfielder Smith and Arsenal’s Ellen White scored in England’s win. Philadelphia Independence duo Amy Rodriguez and Megan Rapinoe scored for the U.S. in its 2-1 win. Aya Miyama scored for Japan. Laura Österberg Kalmari (Sky Blue FC) scored for Finland, but Norway countered with a goal each from Elise Thorsnes (Røa) and Isabell Herlovsen (LSK-Kvinner) to give Norway its first win at the Algarve Cup since 1998.

In Iceland’s upset win, Josefine Öqvist (Linköpings FC) opened the scoring for Sweden before Iceland’s Margrét Lára Vidarsdottir (Kristianstads DFF) tied the game and Katrin Jonsdottir (Valur) scored the game-winner. Carla Couto scored twice for Portugal in its win over Wales. Brøndby midfielder Theresa Nielsen scored to give Denmark a 1-win over China. At the Cyprus Cup, Emily Zurrer scored her first Canadian National Team goal in Canada’s 1-0 win over Scotland, and Manon Melis (LdB Malmö) scored two goals to lead Holland to a 4-1 win over New Zealand.
