The highly anticipated match between the U.S. and Canada at the Four Nations Tournament in Chongqing, China turned out to be a classic. The U.S. held off a surge by Canada in the final four minutes of stoppage time to hang on for the 2-1 win. Nicole Barnhart made a great save on a shot in the final seconds by Christine Sinclair to preserve the win.
After a scoreless first half, Lauren Cheney, who came on as a sub at the start of the second half, scored in the 54th minute to put the U.S. up, 1-0. Kelley O’Hara sent a cross to Lindsay Tarpley who flicked it to her former Boston Breakers teammate Cheney, who then scored from seven yards out. Two minutes later, Canada tied it on Melissa Tancredi’s second goal of the tournament. Kaylyn Kyle sent a great ball to Tancredi, who then went on a breakaway and beat Nicole Barnhart. In the 70th minute, Cheney made a run and pushed the ball over to Tarpley, who beat Karina LeBlanc to make it 2-1 in favor of the U.S
Meghan Klingenberg got her first cap for the USWNT when she came on in the 78th minute for Kelley O’Hara. For Canada, Sinclair made her 150th appearance.
In the first game of the day, You Jia scored her third and fourth goals of the tournament as China topped Sweden, 2-1. Josephine Oqvist was first to score for Sweden in the 18th minute, but Jia scored in the 35th to tie it. The score was 1-1 at halftime. Jia then scored the game winner in the 62nd to give China the win.
