U.S. Women’s National Team Coach Pia Sundhage called up 26 players for the team’s January training camp. The group includes first-time call-ups Jordan Angeli (Boston Breakers), Meghan Klingenberg (University of North Carolina), and Kristie Mewis (Boston College). Mewis is the youngest player called up. The 20-year-old midfielder was the 2008 U.S. Soccer Young Female Athlete of the Year.Sundhage also called up keeper Hope Solo, who is recovering from shoulder surgery. The rest of the team that will train from Jan. 8-13 at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., are keepers Nicole Barnhart (FC Gold Pride), Ashlyn Harris (Western New York Flash), Jill Loyden (unattached ), and Alyssa Naeher (Boston Breakers); midfielders Yael Averbuch (Western New York Flash), Tobin Heath (Sky Blue FC), Meghan Klingenberg (North Carolina), Kristine Lilly (Boston Breakers), Lori Lindsey (Philadelphia Independence), Joanna Lohman (Philadelphia Independence), Kristie Mewis (Boston College), Kelley O’Hara (Boston Breakers), Leslie Osborne (Boston Breakers), Megan Rapinoe (unattached), and Lindsay Tarpley (unattached); and forwards Lauren Cheney (Boston Breakers), Sydney Leroux (UCLA), Alex Morgan (California), and Amy Rodriguez (Philadelphia Independence).
On Monday, Abby Wambach was named the U.S. Soccer Female Athlete of the Year. Santa Clara junior and the U.S. U-20 starting keeper Bianca Henninger was named the U.S. Soccer Young Female Athlete of the Year.
