Bundesliga, Matchday 14/15: Leverkusen Opens Chance for Potsdam

Due to Champions League play, the Bundesliga got uneven in the standings again. Potsdam and Wolfsburg were competing in international action and had to postpone their matches to April 13. Potsdam will face Hoffenheim and Wolfsburg hosts Duisburg before the league resumes with Matchday 16 on the Easter weekend.

Still in the lead is 1.FFC Frankfurt. The team from the Main metropolis defeated Cloppenburg 7-0 but then had big issues in Leverkusen, with that match only finishing in a scoreless draw. This opened the door for Potsdam. Turbine won 4-0 at Duisburg and now trails Frankfurt by only two points before they play their make up game. Also Wolfsburg gained the chance to close the gap to three points to Frankfurt. The Wolves had an easy 7-0 win over Sindelfingen prior to their Champions League break. Just one game behind Wolfsburg sits Bayern München, but the Bavarians have played all 15 matches already. They returned with six points from matches v Essen (3-0) and Cloppenburg (2-1)

The surprise team of the season in Jena follows on fifth position. They first battled to a 2-2 draw v Freiburg, then had a huge 6-1 win at Essen. The two losses made Essen drop to the ninth place, their current run sees them with only one win in the last eight league games. Bayer Leverkusen occupies the sixth place as of now, although they suffered a 5-3 loss to 10th place Hoffenheim prior to the Frankfurt surprise. SC Freiburg moved up to seventh place after defeating last place Sindelfingen, 3-0, with Duisburg now sitting in eight place.

The relegation spots are owned by Cloppenburg and Sindelfingen. BVC is on an eight-game losing streak and trails Essen and Hoffenheim by six points plus goal differential.

Before league action resumes there will be the semifinals in the national cup competition. Heavy favorite to win the title is 1.FFC Frankfurt. They host 2. Bundesliga South top ranked team SC Sand. The visitors haven’t lost a single game since dropping in the cup to Turbine Potsdam 0-1 – this was in December 2012. Their stats since are 30 wins and three draws, but it is likely that this streak will come to an end against Frankfurt. In the second semifinal, an open battle is expected between SGS Essen and SC Freiburg, ninth and seventh in the league, only separated by two points after 15 games.
