U.S. Coach Pia Sundhage names 21-player World Cup roster

The U.S. Women’s National team roster for the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Germany was announced this morning. Coach Pia Sundhage is taking three keepers, seven defenders, seven midfielders, and four forwards to Germany for the tournament, which takes place from June 26-July 17. Nine of the players were part of the 2007 U.S. Women’s World Cup team that finished in third place in China.

The USWNT 2011 World Cup roster:

Goalkeepers: Nicole Barnhart (Philadelphia Independence), Jill Loyden (magicJack), Hope Solo (magicJack).

Defenders: Rachel Buehler (Boston Breakers), Stephanie Cox (Boston Breakers), Ali Krieger (out of contract), Amy LePeilbet (Boston Breakers), Heather Mitts (Atlanta Beat), Christie Rampone (magicJack), Becky Sauerbrunn (magicJack)

Midfielders: Shannon Boxx (magicJack), Tobin Heath (Sky Blue FC), Lori Lindsey (Philadelphia Independence), Carli Lloyd (Atlanta Beat), Heather O’Reilly (Sky Blue FC), Megan Rapinoe (Philadelphia Independence), Lindsay Tarpley (magicJack)

Forwards: Lauren Cheney (Boston Breakers), Alex Morgan (Western New York Flash), Amy Rodriguez (Philadelphia Independence), Abby Wambach (magicJack)

The U.S. will play two friendlies against Japan (May 14 and May 18), and then will face Mexico on June 5 for their send-off game. The USWNT will head to Austria in mid-June for their pre-World Cup camp. Their first game at the World Cup will take place on June 28 against Korea DPR in Berlin. In Group C, they also play Colombia (July 2 in Sinsheim) and Sweden (July 6 in Wolfsburg).
