U.S. U-20s held scoreless for second straight game at Ten Nations Tournament, U-23s win Four Nations

The U.S. U-20 Women’s National Team drew, 0-0, with England today at the Ten Nations Tournament in La Manga, Spain, two days after playing a scoreless 45 minutes against Sweden. The match against Sweden, according to midfielder Samantha Mewis, was canceled after halftime due to thunder and lightning. After training Saturday, the U-20s got back into action today against England. The U.S. had opportunities, but Mewis said they’re having a hard time finishing.

To make up for the lost 45 minutes in the Sweden game, Mewis said the U.S. will play 45 minutes on Monday against France before finishing the Ten Nations Tournament Tuesday against Norway. The team returns to the states Wednesday. The starting 11 for the U.S. against Sweden was keeper Abby Smith (Dallas Texans), backs Arin Gilliland (Kentucky), Abby Dahlkemper (MVLA Avalanche), Mollie Pathman (Duke), and Kassey Kallman (Florida State); midfielders Morgan Brian (Ponte Verde Storm/UVA), Samantha Mewis (Scorpions SC/UCLA), Lindsay Elston (Washingtin), Julie Johnston (Santa Clara), and forwards Kelly Cobb (Cook Inlet Velocity), and Katie Stengel (Wake Forest).

The U.S. U-23 Women’s National Team won the Four Nations Tournament with its 3-2, come-from-behind win Tuesday over Norway. With the U.S. trailing, 2-0, Notre Dame’s Melissa Henderson scored in the 71st minute off an assist from Keelin Winters (Boston  Breakers). University of Milwaukee’s Sarah Hagen tied the game in the 79th minute (assisted by magicJack’s Meghan Klingenberg). Sky Blue FC’s Casey Nogueira scored the game-winner in the 83rd minute off an assist from Hagen.
